Condition: Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an abnormal condition of skin cells called keratinocytes. Keratinocytes are formed in the lower epidermis of the skin and move toward the surface as new cells are generated from below. While the cause of psoriasis is unknown, it is often a predisposition that might be passed through genetics. Recent discoveries indicate that immune cells, called T-cells, appear at the sites of increased keratinocyte activity and might be increasing the production of free radicals which certainly trigger inflammation of the skin.
As a result of this inflammation, skin exfoliation speeds up and becomes abnormal. Due to this rapid exfoliation, cells stick together and build up on the skin, causing scales that can become quite large and might even bleed. Because keratinocytes cells make up most of the epidermis, any part of the body covered with skin may be affected. However, the most common areas afflicted are the scalp, lower back, elbows, knees, groin, genitals, nails and skin folds.
Symptoms of psoriasis vary in the shape and pattern of the scales and in severity. In mild cases, people may not even realize they have psoriasis. In severe cases, the symptoms can be very irritating and painful and can cover a vast area of the body.

Tom, of East Hartford, Conn. has been plagued by psoriasis on his back and right thigh since he was a boy, visiting every type of specialist and taking both internal and external medications to try and clear it up. “Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, worked,” says Tom.

Ana of Watsonville, Calif. is thrilled that finally, she can wear a ponytail. Or tuck her hair behind her ears and show off a new pair of earrings. Since she’s been a young teenager, she’s struggled with a skin condition that left the skin on her head and scalp looking red, raw and feeling tight.
